You can use File->Open to view these files and if you want to restore some hops you deleted, just copy/paste that hops from the open file back into your Ingredients->Hops view. The lower numbered files are the more recent backups. These are found in numbered files such as Hops1.bsmx, Hops2.bsmx, etc. You can view any of these recipes by double clicking on them and then copy the old version back to a local folder using the Copy Local command on the toolbar.īeerSmith also keeps backup files automatically for your profiles and ingredient databases.

You can get to it using the View->Recipe Archive command on the menu.įrom this view you can use the search bar to search for recipe names and it will show all of the versions of that recipe with the date it was edited. However, within BeerSmith 2.2 and higher there is a view called the Recipe Archive that keeps all of the edits to your recipes. However, this will only work within a session and won't undo if you deleted a recipe and closed BeerSmith afterwards. The first line of defense is the Undo button - which will undo the last action taken. Then just start up BeerSmith and it will pick up your data.Ī backup of your Documents/BeerSmith2 folder will protect you from catastrophic failures, but what about the simpler case of an accidentally deleted recipe?

Install BeerSmith, make sure its closed, and copy your backup to Documents/BeerSmith2. If you have a complete copy of your Documents/BeerSmith2 directory, recovery to a new computer can be pretty simple.

I regularly get emails from people who have either lost their computer or had a catastrophic hardware failure and have no backup - which is a disaster. I moved to an online backup myself after losing my main hard drive several years ago. Some of the online solutions are very attractive (Mozy, Carbonite, etc.) as they will back up your documents automatically to an offsite location in case your computer is stolen or destroyed.

So if you use some kind of backup software for your PC or Mac, I would highly recommend you include that directory as part of your regular backup.Īs a side note, I do recommend using some kind of regular automated backup software for your computer - either a local backup to a separate hard drive or an online backup solution.

I frequently get the question "How to I back up my BeerSmith files?" So this week I'm going to take a look at some of the facilities for backing up and recovering data in BeerSmith.įor BeerSmith desktop your files are all stored under the directory Documents/BeerSmith2 for your main user account on both Windows and Mac (~/.BeerSmith2 for Linux). But I'm still disappointed. The info below was copied and pasted from an email from Brad Smith.īacking Up and Recovering Your BeerSmith Recipes After many years of no activity on it, I'm not surprised it's apparently close to defunct. ProMash has been everything I could ever want in a computer program - simple to use, sensible and intuitive GUI, accurate, expandable, adjustable.

I supposed I'll have to make the change when I do finally upgrade to Windows 10, if it fails to work. At the very least I was hoping he was still supporting new sales for those who want a solid easy to use brewing program with a logical layout. My hope with this post - albeit a slim one - was to find that Jeffrey was still supporting this for things like OS changes, etc. So none of that concerns me as much as familiarity with the program and the "feel" of the layout, the intuitiveness that I don't get at all from BeerSmith.

Another fan of the program shared his ingredient databases a couple years ago to help people catch up, and adding things yourself couldn't be easier. That's one of the things that drew me to the program way back when, it's easy expandability. I don't mind adding grains or hops to the ProMash database, either. I understand that's because I know my way around ProMash, but then that's exactly why I want to keep it. I tried BeerSmith, and while I'm certain it is a fine program that does what it is intended to do, it felt completely and totally "off" to me. When 2+2=4 no matter which program you use, there's no need to jump to another program for that. Unless there's some breakthrough in brewing science from out of the blue, that will always be the case. Thing is, the math doesn't change, so the formulas should be the same as well.
